Currently, today marks as my regularization at work. After a year and a half since I graduated, I can now confidently say that I found a home to hone my skills in writing and communications professionally. Being a marketing assistant/technical writer for an IT-based company is tough at first for a journalism graduate like me, but slowly I was able to get on the flow and love my job and the people I am passionate with.
Since I just became regular at work, the subject of promotion is out of my focus. My career plan in terms of my work is very simple, to accomplish my tasks and build a system or a routine in what I do. The promotion topic is something I reserved for you my audience. May be you are bombarded by the thought of when you will be promoted or how to be promoted. You got an excellent evaluation, you were able to accomplish a task that saved the company big time or you became the employee of the month for the whole year, these and other accomplishments may make you wonder if you are closer to a promotion. Now this post will help you analyze your current working status and specifically target to guide you on how you can be promoted in a world where everyone wants to be promoted.
It takes one to know one. You have the only access and knowledge about how well your performance is. If you asked for a promotion and you know you didn’t give you best then you are just fooling no one but yourself. Worst case scenario is, the people behind you won’t respect your new position and talk back negative thoughts that may ruin your confidence. So before you daydream about how your life will be once you got promoted, define first if you are really worthy.
Ask the following questions to yourself:
How many years have I been in the company?
Am I staying enough to prove my loyalty?
Am I still passionate in what I do and not just seek for a promotion for money?
How is my working routine?
Do I go to work on time?
Am I productive rather than workaholic?
Have I accomplished every task given to me on time?
How is my working relationship?
To my boss?
To my peers?
To my subordinates?
To myself?
Plan before you say done
If you have concrete answers to the above questions then you are now ready to conquer the fear and raise the promotion issue to your admin or HR specialist now this comes your Promotion Planning 101 ready.
Take the Initiative. Your boss may be too busy to even bother asking about how the project you are handling is going. With this, keep in mind to always let him be informed. An email for every milestone you have accomplished in the project can be done. Send the copy of the meeting minutes so he/she knows that you were there present. You can also ask for his/her approval from time to time, this way your boss will feel your respect as an employee.
Show numbers. Of course it will be very beneficial and just a normal evidence to show off numbers and quantities for the project given to you. Track how many clients you have brought to the company, how many projects you have accomplished and deliver productive working hours well. It will always be easy to get promoted when there are numbers involved.
Be extra cautious on your attitude. Do not be too aggressive. Earn the respect of your co-workmates. Deliver you accomplishments with the right attitude. Remember that no matter how good your performance is it all boils down to your relationship. No one is an island and just like I said in the beginning, you will never enjoy your promotion when everyone is angry at you.
Working Principle if you want to be promoted
Be PRODUCTIVE not WORKAHOLIC. There’s a big difference between a productive employee and a workaholic employee. If you want that promotion make sure you use your working hours.
Be an ACHIEVER not ABUSER. Work hard in what you do and do not use other people for your promotion. Think what you can bring to the company and what skills you can offer rather than using others abilities and time for things that you should have done.
Be PRESENT not ABSENT. Go to work for just like in school, attendance is important for your boss. If the boss sees you always then he/she will surely remember you. Do not apply for leave unless needed and wanted. Be smart when to go off work. Even if you are just 1 out of many, take in mind that YOUR ROLE is important. Value the job that you have and don’t be like someone who lost his/her job because of attendance.
